Ikea Malm Dresser Goes Glam

A few months ago I ran across this AMAZING product from these uber talented ladies, Danika and Cheryle from O’Verlays.  These gals have created a way to dress up Ikea dressers, nightstands and tables with lightweight, decorative fret-work panels.

I knew I needed storage in my home office but didnt want to spend a ton of money so this was the perfect solution for me!

I bought the Ikea Malm dresser in white and added a white glass top.

I then ordered the Greek Key fret from O’Verlays .

They come in white, which I could have just used them as is:

But I felt I needed a little more boo-ya bling so I spray painted them gold. Now Danika and Cheryle recommend you prime them first, then paint them; well you know me, impatient girl- I just slapped that gold spray paint on.  And so far so good.

I attached the little stickies to the back and secured them to my dresser.  Danika and Cheryle also recommend you use little brad nails to attach them to the dresser, but I didnt want to make any holes in mine in case I decide to change things up (which Im known to do).  So they seem to hold just fine.

Here’s the BEFORE:

And the AFTER:

So much better!!

I also picked up these beautiful magenta flowers from the grocery store last night.  Aren’t they lovely?

I CAN NOT wait to get this office done!  Just a few more things to do and I will then have it photographed by my beautiful and wonderfully talented photographer and share the photos with you soon!  **Edited: Office is DONE- you can see it HERE  and HERE ****

  18. i’ve been eyeing those overlays for a while but don’t have an ikea dresser hanging around the house. love what you’ve done, esp with the gold!!

  19. Another question if you don’t mind, each of the overlays is $25? That’s a pretty steep price for one. You spent almost/as much on the overlays as the chest?

  20. Oops, not sure where my first question went. Do you mind me asking where you got the glass top? I’ve been looking for one for a desk and the glass places here are asking for 3x the cost of the desk to custom cut and bevel one…. Thanks!

  21. Hi Krisen K- I couldnt find your email to answer your questions so I will answer them here. The glass top was purchased at Ikea for $40- its made for that exact dresser. As for the Greek Key’s yes they were a little pricey- I believe I paid about $17 a piece- there is a discount when you buy more than 4 I think. But even at that price I felt it was worth it to have something unique. Sure I could have maybe painted a Greek Key on the dresser-but then it would have been permanent -with the O’verlays if I tire of them I can always remove them and still have my nice white dresser. Thanks for the questions! Have a great day!

  22. Thanks Amanda. I was hoping maybe they came in a pack of 2 :)

I wish someone would actually laser cut thin wood like this. Michaels used to carry cute wood trim but they’ve even dropped that from their line.

    It’s gorgeous!

  23. I love love love the change! I have been anxious to use this product… Glad to see they look amazing! And I totally understand the “can’t wait” and don’t want it to be too permeant!
